Tracy Furutani was born and raised in Los Angeles, and has been a resident of Lake Forest Park since 2004, after stops in the Bay Area and Seattle.

Tracy Furutani graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and history. Tracy then earned a Master of Science in chemistry from Stanford University and a PhD in geological sciences from the University of Washington. Since 1996, he has been a full-time faculty member at North Seattle College (formerly North Seattle Community College), teaching earth sciences, environmental sciences, chemistry, physics, anthropology and biochemistry.
