Urban Forest Planner Drue Morris

Welcome Drue Morris, the City’s New Urban Forest Planner

The City is proud to announce the hiring of a new staff member to fulfill the Urban Forest Planner role here at Lake Forest Park. The candidate pool for this recruitment was highly qualified and competitive. The position supports the City, Tree Board, and community with specialized arborist expertise, tree permit and project reviews, outreach and education, and code enforcement.

Drue Morris, an ISA-Certified Arborist with a Municipal Specialist Endorsement, started with the city this March. Drue grew up and received her arboriculture education in Wisconsin but has called Seattle home for the past four years. She is passionate about workforce development, community education, and building sustainable urban forestry systems. In her free time, she enjoys cheering on her favorite NBA team (Milwaukee Bucks), hiking with her husband, and reading at home with her cats. Drue comes to Lake Forest Park directly from employment in a similar capacity with the City of Bainbridge Island.

Please welcome Drue to the community and introduce yourself at the various community events she will attend in her role. We are excited and look forward to working together.

Community Survey for Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update

The City of Lake Forest Park’s decennial Comprehensive Plan periodic update is under way. The active update effort is required by state law to address recent legislative changes, new King County Countywide Planning Policies (CPPs), and the Puget Sound Regional Council's (PSRC) VISION 2050. Collectively, there are new requirements and policies that change the ways we plan for housing, address the needs of vulnerable residents, and incorporate climate planning. As a member of the Lake Forest Park community, we value your insight and ideas about the city. The city is conducting a community survey and your responses to the short series of questions will help guide planning efforts. Please participate in this survey and indicate what does or does not reflect your impressions of Lake Forest Park and your hopes for the city's future.

Take the survey here.

Scams & Fraud – a Message from the LFP Police Department

We are seeing an uptick in scam and fraud cases resulting in thousands of dollars in losses for our residents. These scams usually target older people and can be extremely convincing.

Some common examples are scammers posing as the IRS, Social Security Office, a police officer, or other government or official agencies. They tell the person they're calling that they owe a large amount of money or are about to lose their benefits and tell them to rectify this by sending money via specific gift cards. There is NEVER a legitimate reason to pay a bill via gift cards. Should you receive one of these calls, hang up and call the entity directly. It is virtually impossible to recover lost money from gift cards once the scammer has been provided with the codes on the cards.

This same type of scam can occur via email or a text message from subjects pretending to be a co-worker, friend, family member, or person of authority. When in doubt, please call the Lake Forest Park Police Department prior to sending any money or gift cards. If the caller becomes aggressive or threatening this is a good indication it is, in fact, a scam.

Locking Mailbox Program

LFP Celebrates Arbor Day with Ivy Removal Demonstration & Tree Canopy Preservation Event – April 27

The City of Lake Forest Park Tree Board invites the community to celebrate Arbor Day on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place at 19055 35th Avenue NE and focus on preserving our precious tree canopy by tackling invasive English Ivy.

This family friendly event will kick off with an educational demonstration on the safe and effective removal of English Ivy. Experts will share essential techniques to protect our trees from this damaging vine. Following the demonstration, volunteers will have the opportunity to join Tree Board members to put those techniques to work directly, helping to maintain a healthy and diverse urban forest.

What’s wrong with Ivy?

Originally brought to our area as a ground cover, English Ivy can be highly destructive to trees and overall forest health. It competes for sunlight and nutrients, can choke out young trees entirely, and makes mature trees more susceptible to collapse in storms due to added weight. Removing English Ivy is a critical step in safeguarding our urban forest for years to come. For more information visit the website of the Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board.

“Lake Forest Park’s beautiful tree canopy is one of our greatest assets. This Arbor Day, let's join forces to protect it." – Tom French, Mayor

Schedule of Events

  • 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. - Ivy Removal Demonstration
  • 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. - Community Ivy Removal Work Party

If you are interested in joining the post-demonstration work party, please bring your work gloves and tools. Refreshments will be provided. This event is a wonderful way for residents to get involved and make a tangible difference this Arbor Day!

License for the Love of Pets

The City of LFP partners with Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) to provide animal control, sheltering, and licensing services. From now through June 30, 2024, RASKC is running its License for the Love of Pets campaign.

A RASKC pet license not only provides identification, protecting your pets 24/7 should they get lost, but also helps fund the animal services program.

During this campaign, late fees are waived for anyone who has fallen behind on renewing their pet’s license.

Your license fee directly supports the work RASKC does in the community. Last year:

  • 808 lost pets brought to the shelter were safely returned to their owners.
  • 831 lost pets wearing a license were found by good Samaritans and safely returned home, avoiding a shelter stay. The 24-hour phone service provides owner contact info for licensed pets.
  • 3,427 pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, small mammals, and reptiles, were adopted into new homes.
  • 4,816 animal service calls were responded to, including after-hours emergency service.
  • $78,605 of specialty vet care for sick or injured pets was paid for with Angel Fund donations.
  • 631 volunteers and fosters supported the program’s lifesaving efforts.

If you have fallen behind on renewing your pet’s license, you can take advantage of the License for the Love of Pets campaign, where late fees are waived through June 30.

Renew or purchase a license online at kingcounty.gov/LicenseMyPet. You can also license in person at most QFC stores, vehicle agencies, and city halls. Come by Lake Forest Park City Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to conveniently license or renew your pet’s license.

Call 206-296-2712 for more information or to license over the phone.

What’s the problem with dog poop? Harmful bacteria can be transmitted from dog waste to children and pets. Landfills are designed to safely handle substances like dog waste, but our yards and parks are not! Scoop the poop, bag it, and place it in the trash. Puget Sound Starts Here!
