Mayor’s Corner- Civility in Our Public Discourse

As a policy maker and civic leader for more than 12 years, I have striven to foster a culture of civility and inclusiveness, as have my Council colleagues.

It is a foundational part of our Democracy to disagree, and it is fundamental and essential for us to choose the path of civility in our conversations, particularly in light of the political climate at the national level.

Many of you have probably heard that a couple of our recent City Council Meetings have been tarnished by bad actors from outside our community with hateful and troubling speech during public comment.

This is not isolated to our small corner of the Puget Sound but is happening all over the country.

Despite this disturbing trend, kindness and civility will always prevail. We will never be deterred in our charge to support our democracy and our civil discourse.

For those of you who have commented at City Council meetings as neighbors and friends, I thank you for your kindness, compassion, and civility.

In today’s unfortunate climate of partisan conflict and uncivil discourse on so many levels, it is truly refreshing to see our citizens again and again choose the higher path and treat each other with respect and dignity.

Please come down to City Hall and make public comments as our neighbors. You are always welcome!

With respect,
Mayor Tom French

The Planning Commission is anticipated to make a formal update recommendation to the City Council this summer, for possible City Council action on the Plan by December 2024. The goal of the periodic update is to incorporate mandates from the state, regional agencies, and county, as well as to include revised or added goals and policies that the community would like to see implemented in Lake Forest Park. We hope to see you at a future meeting.

Council Corner – Help Us Plan for the Future

Daylight Savings Time is upon us and the daffodils are popping up. With a new Mayor and two new Councilmembers, our City is looking to the future. Over the next year, the Council will be considering a Master Plan for recreation at the Lakefront Park, an updated Comprehensive Plan to guide land use and conservation for the next 10 years, a Climate Action Plan in response to climate change, and a 2025-2026 budget. As we do this critical work, the Council would like to hear from you. Community connections and values are what make Lake Forest Park a special place to live. How can we support balanced growth and transit, conserve our trees and streams, encourage community vitality, and keep LFP welcoming, safe, and affordable?

Thanks so much for the wonderful turnout and thoughtful comments from those of you who participated in the survey and meetings for the Lakefront Park. A reminder that all Council and Commission meetings are hybrid public meetings (virtual and in person).  Please sign up here if you would like to receive advance notices.

--Deputy Mayor Lorri Bodi

Take an Urban Hike to Octavia Butler Avenue Right Here in LFP!

In July 2023, the City of LFP held a celebration of Octavia Butler and named her former street in her honor. The Washington Trails Association (WTA) has also acknowledged her contributions to our community with a webpage that shares urban hikes from neighboring communities to the honorary street and a chance to walk in the author’s footsteps.

For more information and route guides, check out the WTA webpage dedicated to this piece of community history.

Don't Produce Waste in the First Place!

What is better than recycling and composting? Not producing waste in the first place!

Waste prevention includes lots of strategies to keep waste from occurring or being produced. Bring your own cup, bottle, or bag when out and about; repair rather than replace a broken item; or choose to purchase something secondhand rather than new.
