It’s great to hear that the LFP Police Department’s “Safety Day for Kids” on July 16 was such a success. In addition to an obstacle course where kids learned safe biking practices, they also got to perfect their skills at dunking police officers – even the Chief was dunked! The giveaways were also a big hit—lots of life jackets, bicycle helmets, and safety gift bags. Thank you to the Northshore Police Foundation, NEMCo and CERT, King County Search / Rescue, King County Marine Patrol, and the Northshore Fire Department!
In other news, if you would like to join us for any of the 2023-2024 biennial budget meetings, here is the meeting calendar. All meetings are open to the public and have an opportunity for public comment. We welcome your participation and feedback.
Be safe and enjoy the rest of your summer.

 LFPPD Chaplain Andy Koss
|
Welcome New Police Chaplain Andy Koss We are pleased to introduce our new Police Chaplain, Andy Koss. Andy started with the LFP Police Department in mid-July, and we are very excited to have him join us.
Chaplain Koss also works as a chaplain for Northshore Fire Department. He graduated from the Chaplain Academy in 2017 and has been working for Northshore Fire since. He was a Navy pilot for 20 years and, after retiring from the military, worked as a FedEx pilot. Chaplain Koss lives in the local area.
A police chaplain may be brought on scene to support first responders and their families during difficult times. Much like the police service, police chaplains are available 24/7, including weekends and holidays. The service provided by chaplains to our officers—and to our community as a whole—is extremely important. We are very fortunate that Chaplain Koss decided to join the Lake Forest Park Police Department family. Chief Mike Harden offered this insight: “I strongly believe that a chaplaincy program can support a culture where officers feel comfortable seeking help and finding support, and I also know that chaplaincy programs can also serve as support systems for officers following critical incidents and other traumatic event on- or off-duty. Chaplain Koss provides a great service to our staff and the community."
Please join us in welcoming Chaplain Koss!

A message from Seattle City Light (SCL) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Regarding Utility Bill Scams As Seattle City Light (SCL) and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) work to inform customers about resources available to help with utility bills, there has been an increase in scam reports of people posing as representatives of the city.
SCL and SPU will not call customers to demand immediate payment or personal financial information. If someone calls demanding payment rather than working with you to establish a payment plan, that is a scam. Customers who believe they’ve been contacted by a scammer should call 206-684-3000 to verify their account.
If you or someone you know is behind on utility bills, please know that resources are available. Learn more about short- and long-term payment plans available to all customers. Income-eligible residential customers may also qualify for bill assistance programs.

King County Hazardous Waste Management Program Offers $5,000 Rebate and Free Trial Products for Eligible King County Businesses Typical degreasers that many businesses use contain chemicals that harm your health and the environment, like methylene chloride, toluene, hexane, and hazardous air pollutants. These chemicals put employees at risk, make work environments unhealthy, and hurt your bottom line.
Small quantity generators - businesses in King County that generate fewer than 220 pounds of hazardous waste are now eligible for a voucher to cover 75 percent of the cost (up to $5,000.00) to switch to safer degreasers. This voucher provides funds to support change-outs for parts washers, brake cleaners, bulk cleaning systems, ultrasonic washers, and other safer products and systems, all to help King County communities reduce their exposures to hazardous air pollutants and other concerning chemicals.
King County also offers free trial products to encourage the transition to safer degreasers. Products currently available include CRC and GUNK brake cleaners, Simple Green spray bottles, reusable metal canisters for bulk solvent systems, and ECOS all-purpose light-duty degreaser.

American Red Cross and Bloodworks NW Announce Blood and Platelet Donations Are Urgently Needed
The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood and platelets, urging all eligible donors to give now to replenish an extremely low summer blood supply.
“Blood donations have fallen short of hospital needs for the past few months, resulting in about 39,000 fewer donations than what’s needed, as well as a significant draw down of the overall Red Cross blood supply. In addition, the Independence Day holiday may have caused many regular donors to postpone donations due to vacation plans. A recent Red Cross poll revealed that more than 75 percent of donors surveyed indicated vacation plans this summer, many of them occurring the weeks before and after July 4.” On its homepage, Bloodworks NW identifies there is an urgent need for donations in the region. There are donation stations in Lynnwood, Everett, Bellevue, and more cities throughout western Washington.
If you would like more information about donating and donation locations check the links below:

Summer Garden Watering Advice We are entering the driest time of the year - so unless your garden only has established drought-tolerant plants, summer watering is a necessity. It is generally better to water deeply and infrequently. Moisten the whole root zone and let the soil dry before watering again. In hot weather, garden beds and lawns (unless you let your grass go dormant) need about an inch of water per week.
Make every drop count by mulching, selecting drought-tolerant plants, using soaker hoses and water timers, and watering only in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
More information is available here.

Clean Yards/Parks = Clean Shoes/Paws = Clean Waters! Picking up after your pet isn’t just the law, it’s the healthy thing to do. Leaving dog poop in your backyard, parks, and trails allows you, your kids, and your pets to track it indoors, inviting a whole army of nasty bacteria into your house. It can also wash into our waterways.
The water quality of our rivers, lakes, and Puget Sound is impacted when fecal matter is left on the ground. When it rains, rain/stormwater has the potential to wash pet waste into our natural waterways which can generate harmful levels of fecal coliform making them unsafe for recreational use. Landfills are designed to safely handle substances like dog waste.
Always remember to scoop the poop, bag it, and place it in the trash!
