Strategic Traffic Safety Plan
The Lake Forest Park Strategic Traffic Safety Plan (STSP) represents our vision to reduce injuries, deaths and economic impact on the regional transportation system. The emphasis areas and strategies are a product of data-driven, collaborative efforts by both citizens, the police department and our regional stakeholders. This plan is truly strategic in nature.
Emphasis Area
Emphasis areas are a required component of all Strategic Traffic Safety Plans and are determined through data analysis and broad stakeholder input. Emphasis areas help direct the city’s resources, and organize stakeholders into teams which produce an achievable action plan concentrating on problem areas.
Speed Reduction
Speeding is among the most significant contributing factors to collisions. Excessive speeds reduce a driver’s ability to react and maneuver and require greater stopping distances. The severity of collisions, particularly those involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, increases dramatically with the speed of the vehicle involved.
Impaired Driving
As partners with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission we are committed to supporting Target Zero and the fundamental premise, “It is about the “One”, One traffic death is One too many.” 1 We believe that this is achievable mostly because this is already the goal of everyone who wants to get to their destination safely and without incident.
Distracted Driving
Distracted driving, primarily cellular phone use, has become an ever increasing cause of collisions. The latest data 2indicates distracted driving in a contributory factor in 32.1% of all collisions and 24.1% in all fatality/serious injury collisions. Unfortunately, the numbers of collisions where distraction is a contributory behavior continues to climb.
Occupant Protection
Occupant safety remains a top priority despite Washington State being among the top seat-belt usage states in the union at 94.5%. 21.9% of fatality accidents involved an unrestrained occupant within the vehicle (Washington Traffic Safety Commission 2012-2014 final data published 1/5/2016) Occupant safety goes further than the driver of a vehicle and includes all occupant protective measures including passenger restraints and proper child safety seat installation and usage.
